Classic Canna Butter Recipe
Prep Time: 45 minutes
Cook Time: 2–3 hours
Makes: About 1 cup infused butter
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup (about 7–10 grams) ground, decarboxylated cannabis flower
- 1 cup water (helps regulate temperature and prevent burning)
Step 1: Decarboxylate Your Cannabis
This step activates the cannabinoids (THC and CBD) so your butter is effective.
- Preheat oven to 240°F (115°C).
- Break cannabis into small chunks (not too fine).
- Spread evenly on a parchment-lined baking tray.
- Bake for 30–40 minutes, stirring halfway through.
Note: You’ll know it’s ready when it turns a light golden brown and gives off that warm, earthy aroma.
Step 2: Infuse the Butter
Now for the fun part, it’s time to let the magic happen.
- In a saucepan or double boiler, melt butter and water on low heat.
- Add the decarboxylated cannabis.
- Simmer gently at 160–180°F for 2–3 hours, stirring occasionally.
Pro Tip: Don’t let it boil. “Low and slow” is the secret to smooth, potent canna butter.
Step 3: Strain & Store
- Place a cheesecloth over a wide-mouth jar or container.
- Carefully strain your mixture, squeezing out every drop (use tongs if hot).
- Let cool, then refrigerate until solid.
Once it sets, the water will separate. Just discard it, and you’re left with golden, infused butter ready to use.
Dosing Tip
Potency depends on the strain and amount of cannabis used.
Start small (½ teaspoon or less per serving) and wait 1–2 hours before consuming more.
Remember: You can always add more, but you can’t un-bake it.
